When I put a netmask type C conduit AEP fails

Hi everyone, when I put in my AEP conduit to netmask type C like 255.255.255.224 the gateway lose network connection and if I try to access it by a browser with the IP that I put in does not Work; but when I put in a netmask like 255.255.255.0 it works.
Why does this happen?
