Include/invite users to forum topic/thread

Is there any way to add and/or notify/ping particular forum users from within a topic? IOW, I would like to let other specific forum members know about a topic and/or invite them to join it to provide feedback, etc. Github and other platforms accomplish this through adding “@username” to a post. Does any similar functionality exist within the MT forum?

At this time the functionality is not installed and will probably not be enhanced until some time next year.

Many of the students are trying to fix the assignments given by their tutors for their final year projects. But, all assignments are too tough for students who are already in a fix to complete their pending tasks.
